Local Croquet Club Captain Coaches Owners at Mount Battenhall Retirement Village

Nestled within the historic grounds of a Grade II* Listed Italianate mansion, Mount Battenhall Retirement Village in Worcester recently hosted a delightful afternoon of croquet, inviting the captain of a Worcestershire croquet club to share his expertise with the community.
The retirement village, situated on the picturesque Battenhall Avenue, is proud of its vibrant events calendar. With an affinity for classic British pastimes, the team at Mount Battenhall set out to introduce the timeless game of croquet to their homeowners.
“We’re always looking for ways to engage our owners and provide them with enriching experiences,” explained Jess Hewlett, the general manager at Mount Battenhall. “Croquet is such a fun game, and we felt it would be the perfect activity to bring our current and prospective owners together in our beautiful grounds.”

A Contagious Enthusiasm for Croquet
The search for the perfect croquet coach led to John Guy, the captain of the local Broadwas Croquet Club. John is also a member of the local u3a interest group which meets monthly at the retirement village. With a wealth of experience and a contagious enthusiasm for the sport, Mr. Guy eagerly accepted the invitation to share his expertise with the village’s owners.
“I was really pleased to be invited here today to help show people how to play croquet,” said Mr. Guy. “Everyone seemed to really enjoy it, and I hope they continue to play regularly.”
During the event, attendees had the opportunity to hone their croquet skills under Mr. Guy’s guidance, while indulging in local strawberries and cream, as well as refreshing summer fruit punch and prosecco served on the terraces of the village’s show apartments.

We All Had a Bit of a Laugh
“I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon as it was something different and it was a lovely day,” shared Alan Aitchison, a homeowner at Mount Battenhall. “I had played croquet 30 years ago with my children in the garden, but I’d never played it properly. John, the croquet coach, was very good, and we all had a bit of a laugh!”
